But before we even start thinking about getting people to our website we first have to let the search engines know that our website exists. So how do you go about letting the search engines know about your new website? You do this by getting the search engines to index your website.
I’ll tell you how to do that in a while but first I want you to watch this video which explains how Google indexes web pages.

Before I tell you how to go about getting your website indexed, I want to make it clear that this does not mean getting your website ranked on the 1st page of search engines. No – Indexing is just letting the search engines know that your website exists. What position you get on the search result listing depends on the quality content your website provides. Ok, let’s get started.
Now before we even index our website there are some guidelines to follow to ensure your website gets indexed properly. Now Google is the major search engine, — It only makes sense that we have a look at their guidelines.
According to Google’s Design and Content Guidelines your website
- needs to have a clear hierarchy and text links,
- is useful and information-rich,
- needs to have alt attributes and title elements that are descriptive and accurate
- have links on a given page to a reasonable number.
If your website meets all those requirements then you are on your way to getting your website indexed properly.
Create A Sitemap
The first thing you want to do is to make sure that your website has a sitemap document. This document contains all pages to your website and lets search engines know when new contents are added.
Websites built on WordPress can easily generate this document using the All In One SEO plugin or Google XML Sitemaps plugin. These plugins will also submit your sitemap to the search engines. This is why I like using WordPress. How to Index Your Website Fast or Let Search Engines
If your website is not created under WordPress, there are always online tools like xml-sitemaps.com to help generate your sitemap.
Submit Sitemap Using Webmaster Tools
The next thing is to create webmaster tools accounts under Bing and Google. After you have created your accounts you want to go in, add your website and then submit your sitemap.
I ‘ll show you how to do it using Google Webmaster Tools, Bing essentially has the same process. To submit a sitemap using Google Webmaster tools:
Log in to your account https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/
Add your website
You will be asked to verify ownership of the website, so follow the instructions provided.
After adding your website click on your website link and click on sitemaps button
Then click on the ADD/TEST SITEMAP button, and enter your sitemap URL, if it’s in the root directory just enter the name of your sitemap, usually sitemap.xml
Create Inbound Quality Links
The video tells us that Google’s programme or so-called spiders follow links. So the first thing you want to do is to include your link into an authoritative site. One way of doing this is by updating your social profiles like Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and so on.
You can also start reading up blogs that are relevant to your website and start putting in quality comments. When adding comments most blogs have an area to enter your website URL.
You can also share and submit your new website link with services like http://www.freewebsubmission.com/ or ping services like http://pingomatic.com/
And there you have it, it shouldn’t take long to get your website indexed. To check if search engines know about your website just put this in the search engine “ site: your website name”, if your website content show up …congratulations your website has been indexed.
